National Clean off Your Desk Day!
This could not have come at a better time as we are working through our kitchen cabinets this week. As we declutter and shed openings for space that we didn’t even know we had, we look at what is important and are we even creating space for it?
Whenever I am decluttering or even just reorganizing a space, I always try to envision what I want the space to be. For example, my dreaded cabinets over a random desk area in the middle of my dining and living room area and it tends to be the “catch-all” for just stuff we bring into the home that hasn’t been assigned a “spot” yet. The cabinets were an accumulation of art supplies, electronics, crafting, and books. I knew I wanted the space to be for the kids because it was an area that was right next to our dining table that serves in so many projects throughout the day. But, as I kept reorganizing it and moving things, I finally realized that this wasn’t the spot for it. It just simply did not have enough space for the contents it had. So instead of becoming frustrated with the space, I decided to find something else that could work with what we had. I found a lovely cart with 10 drawers at Michael for under $40. I took all the supplies out of the cabinet and labeled all the drawers. It is currently stored in the hall closet but it can be wheeled about to fit the project at hand.
This inspired me to look at what needed to be kept and if the space could hold the priority items. Sometimes we have to go outside the designated spot when the items no longer function due to the space.
So as we continue to work on our kitchen cabinets to close out our week, don’t be afraid to celebrate clean off your desk day and think outside the box when it comes to the items we need to function with work. Could they have a different space that would make them more functional?
